SAN ANTONIO—To kick off Mental Health Awareness Month, a local San Antonio doctor is opening his doors to the community by offering free mental health screenings.

“Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to help reverse the stigma associated with mental illness,” says Dr. Harry Croft, psychiatrist at Clinical Trials of Texas (CTT). “Studies have shown that 1 in 5 people in the US suffer from a mental health disorder but unfortunately, only about half of these people seek treatment.”

Croft suggests that many people aren’t seeking the treatment they need because of the stigma and negativity associated with mental health issues.

“Most people don’t look at things like depression, PTSD, anxiety or ADHD the same way they do about other conditions like diabetes or asthma,” says Croft. “As a society we tend to categorize mental illness into a class of its own.”

Mental Health Awareness Month is recognized annually each May to provide support and education to the community and to advocate for equal care. Physicians say that education is important especially for those suffering from these conditions.

“You aren’t alone. If you need help, get it and don’t be ashamed of what you are going through,” says Croft.

Crofts clinic is continually doing research for mental health illnesses including depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Participating in these studies may eventually lead to possible treatments options for those with these conditions,” says Croft

Croft and his colleagues at CTT are offering free screenings by appointment only at 7940 Floyd Curl in the medical center. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Clinical Trials of Texas at 210.949.0122 or visit their website at SAresearch.com
