Symptoms you may be seeing:
• Heavy menstrual bleeding
• Pelvic pain or pressure
• Menstrual periods lasting longer than a week
You may be at risk if you are:
- Premenopausal-estrogen and progesterone stimulate uterine lining growth
- After menopause fibroids shrink due to decrease in hormone production
- A member of a family where the mother or sister had them
- A black woman, which sees a higher incidence of fibroids, often at younger ages
“Up to 80 percent of women experience fibroids by the time they turn 50,” said Dr. Ayo Avworo, DNP, RN, FNP-BC. “Although many women experience no symptoms, any woman who is concerned can have a simple screening procedure to find out if they have them.”
